Getting ready for Anaheim

This will be my first trip to General Convention, and I am getting ready to go. The wisdom that others who have gone before have passed on to me has been deep. Highlights include:
  • The Blue Book is maroon. Still call it the Blue Book anyway.
  • Bring a sweater, a shawl and/or dress in layers. The convention center will be freezing.
  • Keep toys on hand, including, but not limited to, coloring books and implements, small koosh balls, soduku, and lots of paper for origami and airplanes.
  • Don't get up to talk unless you have something important to say that has not been said before.
  • Don't get up to say "I agree with what they said."
  • Don't pay hotel internet fees. Boingo.
  • Do find a legislative committee that interests you and follow it.
  • Do keep a blog that probably no one will follow and that contains no relevant insights.
(that last one was my own advice to myself.)

So, with all of that wisdom recorded for posterity, I make the final preparations for the voyage.

And since this is my first official entry, I will let also tell you what I hope to record in this blog so that you know whether or not you want to follow it. I am a first time deputy to the Episocopal Church's General Convention, and I am a rare breed - a "young adult" Episcopalian deputy - which usually means under 30, depending on who you speak to. As an East Coast liberal (Diocese of Western Mass), I head to the West Coast with excitement and trepidation to see what GC holds in store and to meet the other people, minds and opinions that make up the Episcopal Church.

So in my blog, you can see what it is like for me to head to Anaheim with no idea what to expect, a peer group that I have yet to find and meet, and a "so-so" grasp of the details of many of the issues facing me - a situation that I plan on correcting by the time I leave. I will try my best to give a "young person's" perspective on the event, but I am quickly leaving that age bracket, so the best I can do is to give you my perspective. Hopefully it will help those left behind understand a bit more about GC2009 - and help me understand a bit more about it, too!

Wish me luck! Watch out, Anaheim!
